This week I have the beautiful pleasure of spending Thursday eve with this sexy little talented specimen and dear friend, Mr David Mears. In his own words....
"The Musical Life Of Dave...So Far..." The first instrument I remember trying to learn to play was the violin. Absolutely No idea why! This was in my 1st year of secondary school so aged about 13. Then, during a music class, the teacher asked if anyone would like to learn to play the drums and for reasons unbeknown to me, my hand shot up in the air. Thankfully my parents were 100% supportive, I had many lessons with the amazing Colin Woolway and Mum & Dad bought me my first drum kit, a 4-piece Sonor, which a few years later Colin bought off us when I replaced it with a 7 piece Pearl Export. A few years later, when I was about 17 (1987), I tried to form a band with me on drums. Whilst trying out guitarists I met John - the songs we were trying didn't suit his voice so we shared the singing; at the end of the session he asked me if I'd like to sing in a band he was the drummer for. I then became a lead singer with John on drums, his brother Paul on bass, Andy on lead guitar and Keith on rhythm. The band evolved into "The Skyliners", the line-up changed slightly and all in all we spent 10 years gigging most weekends and became a very popular 50's & 60's covers band. In the early days, our lead guitarist, Andy, left, so our rhythm guitarist took over and I learned to play guitar. In the late 90's I left the band and a few years after became "one of those blokes that played guitar and sang along to backing tracks" in pubs and clubs. In 2016, after about 15 years of solo work, my soul was completely destroyed and my heart no longer held a place for music, not a bit of it, not a single note. I stopped. Completely. Fast forward to 2020, lockdown, and lead guitarist Andy and I started writing and recording a few tunes. We wrote "It's Christmas" and released it (proper like!) as a single. We're very proud of it - it's been played all over the world and so far our royalties total approximately $10. Lucky it was all about the music, heh?! Christmas 2021, Andy and I were out for our Annual Christmas lunch, a conversation was had, phone calls were made and hey presto, February 2022 saw John, his Brother Paul, Andy and me back in a rehearsal room collectively known as "So Yesterday". Our aim is to love the rehearsals, play a few charity gigs/festivals each year and mainly to enjoy being friends of over 30 years who enjoy playing music together. And now of course I get to do a live session with the beautiful, immensely talented Vonbeardingham!
